Religion Benchmark

Introduction: For the quarter one benchmark I'm looking Judaism and Buddhism and how their so called family systems work. My main question was comparing the value of ones child or n which ways are they treated. What education systems are they put through, what housework is expected to come out of them. How is family love really shown through religion and does religion effect how families treat one anther.

Quote one:
"He names his son Fetter. He names his son 'ball and chain'. This is the fetter that will keep me tethered to this life. This is what will keep me imprisoned."

I find This quote i find to be a bit of a contradiction because in the quote it says that " this is the feather that keeps me tethered to this life. This is what will keep me imprison." When the the quote says family I.E his son keeps him in this life is usually a positive meaning his son would get him through a hard time while at the same time it says this is what keeps me imprisoned and usually we look at the idea of imprisonment as a bad thing. From this quote we we can see that Buddhism in particular looks at family as the unit that can can hold one down in good and bad. That man or women has a right to the "sun" to keep going when life is good or bad hence the use of the word imprisonment. What I really get from this quote is that when a person brings anther bring into the world that it is his/her responsibility to make sure that, that one life is cared for in all forms. That even when things get diffucult the child is what keeps a family trying prominently in the Buddhist households.

Quote two:

"Those who see worldly life as an obstacle to Dharma see no Dharma in everyday actions; they have not yet discovered that there are no everyday actions outside of Dharma."

''Those who see worldly life as an obstacle'' really stands out to me and although this quote does not seem like it directly relates to family life. But it does what i mean to say by this that the word obstacle could me so many different things and could get in the way of so many different things. And from my point of view i'm looking at this obstacle as preventing somebody in this case a Buddhist family that does not let things that the world throughs at you get in the way of family and the responsibility that they each have. What i find particularly interesting in the Buddhist religion is that they value a sense of inner peace and not letting obstacles effect them, which then reflects how the family treats one anther. They all place a huge value on stopping the negativity and bad things get to them and place more energy on what keeps them grounded and together that being the family system.

Judaism

Quote one-

"Within the Jewish tradition the family paradigm has been so dominant that it has cast a light on all that we perceive. When we address our God we beckon the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah. It is not a God of concepts we cry out to, but rather the God of our Jewish family."

"Family paradigm had been so dominate." I open with this because While it is a religion that prays and relies on one god. But this shows us that its not an individual that "crys" but that the family does together. That if god should make one of them cry then it effects all of them. That when one is hurt its the job of the family to help pick up the peaces. That not one family member should have to go through challenges themselves. But this is not just relavent to just one family but this is the message that god sends out to these families. To families that believe in Judaism god tells them that family is number one and without them you have nothing

Quote two-

Judaism regards the family as the carrier of tradition and the agent for the perpetuation

of our people. “Denying a child religious knowledge robs the child of an inheritance.”

This is particularly interesting to me because i found that its not only family that matter and that each one put their own needs under the ones that they love. But that making sure each member of the family is properly educated so they all understand and have the same values. Maybe this is why these families get along so well because studying and understanding the same values so there is really no room for disagreements. Or room for others to get upset at one anther. The last thing i would like to point out is that they say "Robs the child of an inheritance" Which is stating that this culture looks at inheritance as a lesson or knowledge that children learn while they grow up something they are entitled to VS getting money or something of that sort.

Conclusion-

The central question now remains why is this important? No matter what religion we are family weather it be blood or just people we have a strong bond with. That it is a component is every life style so to me i wanted to see how in two very spiritual religions and how such self awareness effects family or interactions with others. Because through this whole unit we studied rights and war things that most people pay a lot of attention to. While family not a lot of people pay it much mind so i thought it would be interesting to shed some light in that subject.
